There are many points of failure in the voting process. Rother addresses the transmission of the 'votes' from the polls to the courthouse. She also addresses the handling of the memory card that contains the 'votes.' She can not verify the accuracy of either the casting or counting of the votes. No one can without making a really big scene. Such verification simply can not happen without investigating, among other things, the test vote-cast and vote-count programs and data files and the actual vote-cast and vote-count programs and data files.
The crux of the problem in verification is that the vote is cast in secret. If votes were cast by first casting the vote, getting a print out and then walking up to the election judges and announcing candidate by candidate and ballot initiative by ballot initiative who and what the voter was voting for, the election judges would then be able to reconcile and confirm on the spot the running total for the votes. These totals would then be confirmed by the whole panel in real time. These totals then could be verified at the courthouse where the final grand totals are summed and announced. The judges and poll watchers would be witnesses to this.
But we have secret votes for the same reason we have election fraud. People are willing to cheat and intimidate others in order to win elections. Think about it. Why are votes secret? And if they weren't secret, apart from absentee balloting, how could there be any fraud in casting and counting votes. The emphasis for stealing elections would shift to absentee ballots and preventing people from going to the polls through threats and intimidation.
Prosecuting those who would commit vote fraud and voter intimidation should be with prejudice. Those who would steal elections should serve thirty days in the town square stocks before being tarred and feathered and run out of town on as rail. Their names should be posted along side the sexual offenders, and their participation in any taxpayer supported service or office should be forever prohibited. |
